The Climate App: Creating A More Eco-Conscious Society

Founded by NASA research scholar Samuel Naef, The Climate App could be a new way forward in creating sustained and effective climate action.

With only an estimated eight years remaining before the effects of climate change can no longer be reversed, we are quickly running out of time to turn climate awareness into climate action. Last week, a crowdfunding campaign launched to create The Climate App; a new way of measuring one’s individual effect on the planet. The Climate App is built for a generation who are ready to change the future course of our planet in the face of governments who continue to fail to prioritise the environment and reach climate goals – a generation who are ready to hold themselves accountable for their effect on the planet.

Founded by NASA research scholar, Samuel Naef, The Climate App provides a way to track the carbon emissions of everyday behaviours and lifestyle choices in order to calculate your carbon footprint. Users can record their diet, travel, energy consumption and plastic use, with a goal to include more actions as the app continues to grow. Users will be able to see their progress in data points and graphs to clearly see how their choices contribute to carbon emissions and how adjustments can be made to reduce their carbon footprint. The app also allows users to track the carbon emissions of others, putting individual action into a collective space to harness the influence of positive peer pressure and encourage environmentally friendly behaviour.

The Climate App is a new way of inspiring people to put environmental factors at the forefront of behavioural and lifestyle choices. This app will allow users to become more aware of how the way that they live affects the planet, transforming the way we think about our everyday lifestyles to consider climate change.

Changing your behaviour to become more environmentally conscious seems like a daunting task. The aim of The Climate App is to make these changes simple and manageable and motivate people to act together as a community to reduce their carbon footprints. As founder Samuel Naef puts it: “It is much more easy to do when you feel everyone else around you is doing it too, and how it all contributes to a larger end goal.”

Action for the climate is progressing far too slowly and drastic change is needed now. Individual action must become collective action and The Climate App provides the perfect opportunity for users to work together to create a society that is more eco-conscious and change the way that we think about our place on this planet.
