Sir Keir Starmer Wins The Labour Leadership Election

Starmer promises to ‘lead the party into a new era, with confidence and hope’.

Sir Keir Starmer has won the Labour leadership election in the first round, with 275,780 votes (56.2%).

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Starmer’s closest challenger, came second with 135,218 Labour Party member votes.

Sir Keir Starmer has tweeted a video, saying it is the “honour and privilege of [his] life” to be elected as the new Labour leader.

He says it comes “at a moment like none other in our lifetime” due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
